The Positive Impact of Health Coaching

It's no secret poor self-management of chronic disease makes up the majority of avoidable healthcare spending. The good news is health coaches can drive positive behavior change and better self-management through personalized guidance and support. Health coaches deliver vital support and education to patients with chronic conditions (such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, COPD, and hypertension), acute care support, and shared decision making (SDM) guidance, and medication adherence support.

Health coaching has been proven effective in helping individuals better understand their conditions, overcome barriers to medication adherence, and reach personal health goals. The personalized experience gives patients the tools and confidence to reach their specific health goals and to take charge of their health.

The powerful influence of health coaches is getting some deserved attention. A recent article examines the growing role of health coaches in improving health and wellness outcomes for individuals and overall population health. Health Dialog’s Jill Goodspeed discusses the tailored approach health coaches use when working with patients, a recent effort by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute to study the impact of coaching on senior patients resuming exercise after a fall-related fracture, and past research on the positive impact and value of health coaching for patients with type-2 diabetes.

Helping individuals understand their health status and how to meet their care needs is vital for effective self-management. Learn how our expert health coaches educate, motivate, and empower patients.
